damask

s.

Single colour Jacquard fabric in silk with shining flowery or geometric designs on an opaque surface. It has an Oriental origin. At one time it was used for lavish dresses, but, later passed on to furnishings. The name is derived from Damascus, the capital of Syria, where it was produced and commercialized.
